Christmas Holiday tips from Cobb County Police Department - PENS Bulletin

CRIME TRENDS

With the continued rise in price for recyclable metals, we have seen a recent spike in the theft of commercial air conditioning units. Both residential and commercial properties have the potential to fall prey to this type of criminal due to the difficulty in positively identifying the stolen items. As police departments in the metro Atlanta area continue to network with area recyclers in an attempt to combat thefts of recyclable metals, we have developed the ability to send out alerts to area recyclers when identifiable metals are stolen. To aid with the identification of metals such as the coils within an AC unit, it has been recommended to paint the coil a bright fluorescent color to help distinguish it from other units.

Although vandalism of Christmas decorations often goes unreported to the police, I have received informal information that there has been an increase in this type of activity within certain neighborhoods in East Cobb. It is important that you remind your teens that damaging someone’s property is more than a prank, it is a crime and it comes with serious consequences. A teenager who has just turned 17 and who goes into someone’s yard and damages their decorations can be charged with a crime and be taken to jail. If the damage exceeds $500, which is not hard to do these days, the crime becomes a felony. Having a criminal record can make someone ineligible for scholarships and other types of financial aid and close the door to many potential jobs.

WHAT YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS CAN DO

We have had significant success with apprehending criminals because you called 911 to report suspicious behavior. You are the eyes and ears in your neighborhoods and you, more than anyone else, know who doesn’t belong. Call 911 anytime you see individuals on foot in your neighborhood that you don’t recognize or vehicles that drive slowly up and down the street or that are stopped with someone just sitting in the vehicle. Even if everything checks out at the time, we still have their information on record.

Don’t forget the basics of crime prevention when it comes to keeping your home secure. A security system with an audible alarm is a great deterrent to have. Be sure to set your alarm every time you leave the house. Make sure that your alarm service yard signs and window decals are visible from the street and replace them when they start to show age.--- Note:  All alarm systems need to be registered with the Cobb County Police Dept. See details on registration process here - http://police.cobbcountyga.gov/alarms.htm

Keep windows, doors, and garage doors closed and locked when you are away. Purchase a timer for your exterior lighting or turn it on before you leave if you don’t plan to get back home until after dark.

Do not store large quantities of cash or jewelry (or gold/silver) in your home but instead use a safety deposit box at your bank. You may not avoid becoming a victim of a burglary but you can certainly minimize your loss.

Garbage Collection Services

We have a free market when it comes to our garbage. We can have it hauled off by whomever we choose, or we can keep it at our house and never get rid of it...

We are using J & G Garbage service - they pickup twice a week (Tuesday's and Friday's) for $21 a month at the curb. Most other trash haulers only come once a week.

Any other suggestions or recommendations for residents?

Sprayberry High School Students on Renny in culdesac

After the crime watch program signs were installed, I've noticed the lack of mass congregation on the cul-de-sac ... so far.  But if you look up on the sidewalk, most of the students are smoking cigarettes and congregating at the end of the backyard fences between the two homes bordering the sidewalk path to Sprayberry High.

Are they like criminals knowing that they don't dare breach the perceived safety of the chain-link-fence?

Are they still tossing their cups, smokes, and garbage into the backyards of the two homes even after one resident placed a garbage can nearby to collect the waste?

I thought teenagers were concerned with the environment?

A note from the RAVN Board…Why are the dues required so early????

I want to begin by explaining why the RAVN Board is requesting the membership dues early. In light of not being able to open last year, we want to 100% ENSURE that we have the proper funds needed to OPEN and STAY open all summer.  The decision to open the pool will be decided on May 1st 2012.  This date allows ample time to get the pool (1) ready for Cobb County inspection, (2) address new pumps & maintenance issues, (3) and ready to be OPENED accordingly for a full summer season :)

For those of you that have sent your memberships in THANK YOU!! Your commitment to re-opening this facility is greatly appreciated. In addition, please note: ANY and ALL membership funds will be deposited upon receipt (7-10 days)...however there will be ZERO funds paid out for the pool until May 1st.  This ensures that in the event the membership numbers are too low then 100% refunds can be sent out.

The new Board has some fantastic new ideas for RAVN and a huge commitment on keeping the pool a fun, clean, family focused facility.  Let's get this wonderful neighborhood asset back up and running for all to ENJOY!! :)

Full Family Membership
$325.00 - if paid in full by March 1st
$350.00 - if paid in full March 1st through May 1st
$375.00 - if paid anytime after May 1st

Where do you dispose of your turkey fryer oil?

Please don't dump it on the ground or into the sewer or just toss it in the garbage...this oil can be recycled.

I have a client who recently purchased a foreclosure containing a 5 gallon container of cooking oil in the back yard.  Since the bank never took responsibility to dump it, who will?  You got it - me, their agent.

So the next step is to find someplace in Marietta to recycle the oil.

Well, I first contacted Keep Cobb Beautiful but they didn't know of anywhere in Marietta that took the oil.

Roswell Recycling Center & City of Smyrna takes the oil...But what about around Sprayberry High?

I then called many recyclers and they all told me that they don't pick up oil from single family residences, but they do pick up at Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods and other restaurants.  After searching for a couple of weeks with negative replies, I spoke with a manager at the Sprayberry Chic-Fil-A at Sandy Plains & East Piedmont intersection across from Sprayberry High School.  He said "bring it on"! Update 12-12-2011: I brought it and they took it!

So once you have fried your turkey after the holidays and are looking to discard your fryer oil, contact Chic-Fil-A and coordinate the oil drop into their recycling container.

Of course, if you want to drive your oil to Smyrna or Alpharetta:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The City Of Smyrna Recycling Education Center
 645 Smyrna Hill Drive
(770) 431-2869
(Smyrna Hill Drive is located 1 block south of Concord Road on South Cobb Drive.)
 Recycling Center (map)
 Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tues., Wed., Fri., and Sat.; 12 p.m. - 8:00p.m. Thurs.
 Closed: Sun. and Mon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roswell Recycling Center, located at 11570 Maxwell Road, Alpharetta 30009, accepts vegetable oil for recycling.

Village North Phone Book & Magazine Recycling Drive

Give me your tired & your poor…

old phonebooks & magazines

Saturday (12-10-2011) from 10:00-11:00 am, I will collect old phonebooks &  magazines and drop them off in the recycling bin at the Kroger on Chastain & Canton Roads.  I will park my pickup truck at the entrance of the RAVN pool facility and be there to collect any phone books & magazines you want to discard...Thanks!

Note(Since Chastain Kroger's landlord removed the recycling bins - I will drop them at either or Sandy Plains Baptist Church or Kincaid Elementary) - SP Recycling said I could drop the phonebooks into bins for newspaper.
