Poop Stations - Yeah or Nay?

What a subject to tackle right after Thanksgiving, huh?

Fast facts - Google "stop dog poop in yards" and you get about 3 million results - so it's not necessarily just a local issue. There's actually many ways to try and stop dogs from leaving their waste on your yard.

It is a free country and dog poop eventually melts away, sometimes after the unsuspecting home owner, other sidewalk/street walker, or another pet steps in it. Or maybe even worse, if the poop contains contaminants that another dog or human contracts and gets ill, then I bet you would feel bad if the cause was your pet

There are some health issues and concerns:
  • Campylobacteriosis/campylobacter- a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea in humans.
  • Salmonellosis- the most common bacterial infection transmitted to humans from animals. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Toxocarisis- roundworms transmitted from animals to humans. Symptoms include vision loss, rash, fever, or cough.
  • fecal streptococcus and fecal coliforms are just two examples. In sufficiently high amounts, these bacteria can make people sick — sometimes very sick. For example, E. coli bacteria often causes gastrointestinal infections, as well as infections to the ear, eye, and throat.
In the past, some people have setup their own plastic bag receptacles throughout the neighborhood or placed signs in their yards indicating NO POOP PLEASE!.

Lots of dog walkers in the neighborhood, but varied degrees of cleanup after they have "done their business".

So is it time for poop station strategically placed within the subdivisions with Kroger, Publix, or newspaper protective covers?

Bottom line:  The most effective way to eliminate dog poop from your yard is to tell the dog owner when it happens!

Each post is intended to be information about or for the benefit of Village North Subdivision including events, garage sales, or affecting us in some way. I welcome any news or information about the neighborhood and will share what I think might be of some use, benefit, or just to let you know what is going on.
